EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
